Noe Valley Victorian revived

Four-bedroom home modernized and updated

- By Jordan Guinn

Southern-facing yards bask in rays whenever the sun’s out and flat blocks are a commodity in San Francisco. Pair those elements with a striking facade and a cutting-edge interior and you’ll get 121 Clipper Street, a four-bedroom Victorian in the almost obscenely popular Noe Valley.

“It’s bright with great volume and it has all the innovations and amenities young, high-tech people are looking for,” said Yola Haddad Ozturk of Vanguard Properties, listing agent for the home a mere three blocks from the boutiques and restaurants of 24th Street. “There’s radiant heating Nest thermostats in every room and a charging station for an electric vehicle.”

The home dates back to about 1904, but only the design of the facade appears to be from that time. The remodel eliminated the stuffy, compartmentalized interior Victorians often fall victim to, exchanging it with an open floor plan, multiple skylights, Arterior light fixtures, a Nest thermostat in every room and sleek glass railings for the turned staircase.

Wiring, plumbing and electrical systems are all updated, as is the case with the landscaped backyard.

A reverse floor plan sees the home open to the main level, where a sun-drenched foyer leads to a voluminous great room. The chef ’s kitchen with an oversized Calcutta marble island, custom cabinetry and Thermador appliances steals the spotlight, though a gas fireplace in the living area enjoys its share of attention as well.

Fleetwood pocket doors along the rear wall of the great room retract to reveal a deck overlooking the landscaped garden. A glass railing flanks the deck while not obstructing the view and the platform serves as a cover for the concrete patio off the lower level.

The outdoor spaces on each level connect to the south-facing yard with an outdoor fireplace and a second deck across the lawn at the back edge of the lot.

The master suite is one of three bedrooms on the lower level and opens directly to the covered patio. A walk-in closet, freestanding soaking tub and steam shower are high-end inclusions of the suite itself.

Noe Valley’s positioning near transit lines and shuttles creates an attractive resting place for Silicon Valley employees and young families. Edwardians and Victorians stand shoulder to shoulder in the neighborhood frequented by joggers and people walking their dogs.

Years of exploding interest send area homeowners into a frenzied search for architects, contractors and remodeling experts in hopes of cashing in. Facades obscured by scaffolding are simply part of the scenery now. Investors acquired the property a few years back for the express purpose of modernizing a home that wasn’t living up to its potential, Ozturk said.
