Cal in AP poll for 1st time since 2009

-

More than just a handful of poll voters have taken notice of Cal’s unbeaten start.

The Bears came in Sunday at No. 24 in the Associated Press Top 25 and the Amway Coaches’ Poll with 149 and 89 votes, respectively. With 39 points, Cal is also No. 22 in the NCAA College Football Power Rankings.

Cal, which is 4-0 for the first time in eight years, last appeared in the AP poll in 2009.

Sonny Dykes’ team is fresh off a 30-24 win at Washington, its second road victory in two weeks. The Bears would match their best start in 65 seasons with a home win Saturday over Washington State.

Ducks dropping: Oregon is out of the AP poll for the first time since 2009, snapping its streak of Top 25 appearances at 98.

The Ducks were blasted at home 62-20 by Utah on Saturday night. It was the most points ever allowed by the Ducks at Autzen Stadium and gave them two September losses for the first time since 2004. Spartans’ record: Tyler Ervin rushed for three touchdowns and a San Jose State singlegame record 300 yards Saturday night to help the Spartans beat visiting Fresno State 49-23.

Ervin’s rushing total was the most in an FBS game this season. Joe Gray completed 20 of 23 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns for San Jose State (2-2, 1-1 Mountain West). The Spartans finished with 543 total yards and 33 first downs while nearly doubling Fresno State in time of possession.

A 30-yard touchdown run by Ervin gave the Spartans a 28-10 lead with 11:18 left in the third, but a 29-yard touchdown pass from Ford Childress to KeeSean Johnson and a 5-yard scoring run by Jamire Jordon trimmed the Fresno State (1-3, 0-1) deficit to 28-23; Kody Kroening missed the PAT attempt.

Gray had a 49-yard touchdown pass to Tim Crawley and a 9-yard scoring toss to Billy Freeman before Jimmy Pruitt’s interception-return TD sealed it for the Spartans. Prayers: Georgia players are using social media to offer prayers for injured Southern wide receiver Devon Gales. Southern announced after Saturday’s 48-6 loss to No. 8 Georgia that Gales suffered a spinal injury in the game and was admitted to Athens Regional Hospital. Southern said Gales had surgery to repair several fractures in his neck.
