Love triangle: A Maryland mother, her daughter and the daughter’s boyfriend have been charged with murder in the killing of the woman’s husband and a lover, police said. Anne Arundel County police said the wife and her husband had been part of a love triangle with a women they let move into their basement over the summer. Police said the wife plotted with her 13-year-old daughter and they recruited the teen’s boyfriend, 18-yearold Gabriel Struss, to kill her husband and the other woman, Jacqueline Riggs. The husband and Riggs were found dead in the Lothian home Oct. 5. The Associated Press is not naming the girl or her parents because she is a juvenile.

Benghazi hearing: Huma Abedin, a longtime aide to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton, testified Friday before the House committee investigating the deadly 2012 attacks in Benghazi, Libya, as the panel faced fresh criticism from Republicans and Democrats about the purpose of its inquiry. Abedin met behind closed doors for the hearing on the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks on the U.S. facilities that killed four Americans, including Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens. Clinton herself is scheduled to appear before the panel Thursday. The panel is under intense scrutiny after two House Republicans described the GOP-led committee as partisan and aimed at hurting Clinton’s presidential bid, a characterization the panel’s chairman rejects. Abedin’s testimony was expected to focus on events leading up to the September 2012 Benghazi attacks, as well as on the attacks themselves and their aftermath.

Texas wildfire: Crews fought a central Texas wildfire Friday that has consumed nearly 50 structures over 7 square miles. Residents of about 400 homes in Bastrop County, about 40 miles southeast of Austin, have been advised to evacuate since the fire began Tuesday. The blaze was likely sparked by sparks from a farming shredder. No deaths or injuries have been reported. Bastrop County officials hope the arrival of a cool front will help slow the advance of the fire. Smoke from the wildfire has wafted into downtown Austin.

Pedestrian killed: One pedestrian was killed and another was injured when a Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department patrol car responding to a crime call collided with another vehicle and ran off the road in West Hollywood. Authorities say the two deputies who were in the patrol car were also hospitalized after the crash late Thursday. The patrol car clipped the rear of the other vehicle near Santa Monica and San Vicente boulevards and jumped a curb, striking the pedestrians, officials said. The crash is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.

Overdue books: Portland State University librarians in Oregon finally got their hands on two overdue books — a half century after they were checked out. Someone put two books checked out in 1963 into a book drop, accompanied by an anonymous note. The note acknowledges that the books are “outdated — yes — but I’ll let you decide their fate now.”
