Where: Spartan Stadium When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday TV/Radio: ESPNU/1590, 860 Story line: First place in the MWC’s West Division is at stake in a matchup that features two of the best running backs on the West Coast. San Diego State junior Donnel Pumphrey is averaging 96.2 yards per game on the ground. He gained 261 yards on 21 carries and scored three times in the Aztecs’ 38-7 romp over the Spartans last season. San Jose State senior Tyler Ervin ranks fourth in the nation in rushing yards per game with 145.7. This is the Aztecs’ second appearance in the Bay Area this season; they lost 35-7 at Cal on Sept. 12.

Injuries: San Diego State — Safety Trey Lomax (knee) is doubtful. Linebacker Randy Ricks (foot) and defensive end Dakota Turner (knee) are out. San Jose State — Running back Thomas Tucker (ankle) is out.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

After switching between senior Joe Gray and junior Kenny Potter as the Spartans’ starting quarterback, it appears head coach Ron Caragher has settled on Potter. Potter missed two games because of an ankle injury before returning for last Saturday’s 33-27 overtime win at UNLV. He went 30-for-48 for 329 yards and two touchdowns. Potter’s passing could be the key; in the Aztecs’ three wins, they’ve allowed a combined total of 384 yards through the air. In their three losses, that number is 919.

If the Spartans can contain Pumphrey, they should be in pretty good shape. San Diego State quarterback Maxwell Smith hasn’t exactly lit up scoreboards this season. A transfer from Kentucky, Smith has completed 46.3 percent of his passes and is averaging 137.2 passing yards per game.

Fans can see some Super Bowl history in the East Field parking lot from 3 to 7:30 p.m. As part of the celebration of Super Bowl 50 coming to Levi’s Stadium in February, the 49ers’ five Vince Lombardi Trophies and the Raiders’ three will be on display. Former San Jose State offensive lineman David DiazInfante, who’s the analyst on ESPNU’s telecast, is scheduled to be at the East Field parking lot from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. He owns two Super Bowl rings from his days with the Denver Broncos.
