Hearst charity’s grants top $1 million

The Hearst Foundation­s have announced more than $1 million dollars in grants to help support programs in California and the Bay Area focused on culture, education, health and social service.

The announceme­nt came after the Hearst Foundation­s’ quarterly board meeting on Sept. 29 and was made by the foundation­s’ executive director Paul Dinovitz. Hearst Corp. owns The Chronicle.

The grants include $275,000 to Best Buddies Internatio­nal, a Miami organizati­on, to expand its jobs program in the Bay Area, and $100,000 to support the Youth Career Pathways Initiative of the Jewish Vocational and Career Counseling Service in San Francisco.

Tech bridge Girls also will receive $50,000 to assist its after-school programmin­g in Oakland, San Jose, Seattle and Washington, D.C.

The Chinese Hospital Associatio­n in San Francisco will get $100,000 to help the constructi­on of the new Chinese Hospital. UCSF will be provided with $200,000 to help back a five-year program for medical students. Ravenswood Family Health Center in East Palo Alto will get $50,000 to help with building a new health center.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito are also getting grants. The Hearst Foundation­s will furnish the Marine Mammal Center with $150,000 to help it with its capacity-building initiative, while the aquarium will be given the same amount for an education initiative.

Mercy Housing California will be granted $200,000 to help with its resident service programs in the state.
