Cayucos concert series closes with pier opening
The final Cayucos Beach Concerts may end this fall’s series, but it will be just the beginning of the Cayucos Pier’s new life. The beloved 143-year-old landmark established the classic California beach town as an important commercial port for goods and passengers traveling between Los Angeles and San Francisco, but safety concerns over the deteriorating pilings that support the wooden structure shut it down in 2013. A ribbon cutting and tour of the rehabbed pier will be the warm-up act for the popular Hawaiian slack-key guitarist Makana. Vitals: Oct. 31, 1-5 p.m. Free. Ocean Front Street, Cayucos. (805) 995-1200. www.cayucoschamber.com. Del Mar’s new fall season: After introducing the new race series last year, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club brings back the fall Bing Crosby Season, expanded to one month. The bonus season was named after the crooner and actor who opened the seaside track in 1937 and was a frequent presence there, along with many celebrity pals. Most post times will be at noon on weekends, 12:30 Thursdays and Fridays. Oct. 29-Nov. 29, Thursday-Sunday. See website for schedule and prices. (858) 755-1141. www.dmtc.com. Halloween at Moaning Cavern: After a month of family activities each weekend in October at Moaning Caverns in Vallecito, Calaveras County, the new Halloween at the Caverns event will culminate Halloween day with nonstop adventure rides, a pumpkin patch, decorated pumpkin and homemade costume contests, and cavern walks accompanied by the famous ghostly “moaning.” Older kids and adults can sign up to launch pumpkins at targets from a zip line; successful sharpshooters win a free zip line ride. Oct. 31, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Most activities free; Great Zip Pumpkin Smash $55. See website for cavern adventure prices. (866) 762-2837 or (209) 736-2708. www.caverntours.com.
