Another 20-win season for St. Mary’s

Calvin Hermanson scored 16 points and St. Mary’s notched its ninth straight 20-win season with a 68-62 win over visiting Loyola Marymount on Saturday night.

The Gaels (20-4, 11-3 WCC) had their largest lead at 43-23 after Hermanson capped a 10-2 start to the second half with a three-pointer at the 14:33 mark.

The Lions (11-15, 4-11) chipped away at the deficit for the rest of the second half and Steven Haney’s four-point play cut it to seven with 42 seconds left. But LMU got only as close as the final score.

#1 Villanova 73, St. John’s 63: Daniel Ochefu had 25 points, Ryan Arcidiacon­o scored 13 and the host Wildcats (22-3, 12-1 Big East) handed a 16th straight loss to St. John’s (7-19, 0-13).

Wisconsin 70, #2 Maryland 57: Vitto Brown scored 21 points and the Badgers (16-9, 8-4 Big Ten) shut down the Terrapins (22-4, 10-3) in the first half and held on to end Maryland’s 27-game home winning streak and knock it out of a tie atop the Big Ten standings.

#6 Kansas 76, #3 Oklahoma 72: Devonte’ Graham scored 27 points and did a tenacious job defending Buddy Hield to help the Jayhawks (21-4, 9-3 Big 12) defeat the host Sooners (20-4, 8-4), who fell out of a tie for the conference lead.

#5 Xavier 74, Butler 57: J.P Macura scored 13 points as the visiting Musketeers (22-3, 10-3) won their sixth of seven and retained sole possession of second place in the Big East.

Duke 63, #7 Virginia 62: Grayson Allen banked in a shot at the buzzer as the host Blue Devils (19-6, 8-4 ACC) snapped the Cavaliers’ sevengame winning streak. Malcolm Brogdon had 18 points for Virginia (20-5, 9-4) and his reverse flip layup with 9.9 seconds left put the Cavaliers up 62-61. Freshman Brandon Ingram scored 25 points for Duke.

#10 West Virginia 73, TCU 42: Jonathan Holton (14 points, seven rebounds) returned from a suspension for a violation of team rules as the host Mountainee­rs (20-5, 9-3) maintained a share of the e Big 12 lead.

Notre Dame 71, #13 Louisville 66: Demetrius Jackson matched his career high with 27 points and the host Irish (18-7, 9-4 ACC) used three 7-0 spurts in the second half to get the win over the Cardinals (19-6, 8-4).

#14 Iowa State 85, #24 Texas 75: Georges Niang and Monte Morris each scored 24 points for the host Cyclones (18-7, 7-5 Big 12), who allowed just one point in the final 2:29 to hold off the Longhorns (16-9, 7-5).

LSU 76, #15 Texas A&M 71: Ben Simmons had 16 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists as the host Tigers (16-9, 9-3) remained tied atop the SEC standings with Kentucky.

#16 SMU 69, Gonzaga 60: Nic Moore had 25 points and 11 assists to lead the Mustangs (21-3) in Dallas, snapping a six-game winning streak for the Zags (20-6) in a non-conference matchup of league leaders.

Michigan 61, #18 Purdue 56: Zak Irvin scored 22 points, and the host Wolverines (19-7, 9-4 Big Ten) scored the game’s final 11 points to defeat the Boilermake­rs (20-6, 8-5).

#20 Providence 75, Georgetown 72: Rodney Bullock had 23 points and 10 rebounds, Kris Dunn added 20 points, and Ben Bentil finished with 16 points and nine rebounds to help the host Friars (19-7, 7-6 Big East) end a three-game losing streak. The Hoyas (14-12, 7-6), down 26 points in the first half, had a chance to tie it in the closing seconds, but L.J. Peak’s three-point attempt was blocked by Bullock.

Texas Tech 84, #21 Baylor 66: Keenan Evans scored 21 points and had two steals as the Red Raiders (15-9, 5-7 Big 12) notched their second consecutiv­e win over a Top 25 team. Taurean Prince had 17 points to lead Baylor (18-7, 7-5).

#22 Kentucky 89, South Carolina 62: Tyler Ulis had 27 points and 12 assists, Jamal Murray scored 26 points and the visiting Wildcats (19-6, 9-2 SEC) won despite coach John Calipari being ejected less than 3 minutes into the game.

Northern Iowa 53, #25 Wichita State 50: Klint Carlson scored 12 points, Wyatt Lohaus had 11 and the Panthers (16-11, 8-6 Missouri Valley) ended the nation-leading 43-game home winning streak of the Shockers (18-7, 12-2).

USF 68, San Diego 51: Tim Derksen scored 18 points for the Dons (14-11, 7-7 WCC), who pulled away in the first half against the Toreros (8-17, 3-11). USF led 10-0 and never trailed.

BYU 96, Santa Clara 62: Nick Emery had 18 of his 31 points before intermissi­on and the visiting Cougars (19-8, 10-4 WCC) cruised over the Broncos (9-17, 5-9), who were led by Jared Brownridge’s 16 points.

New Mexico 74, San Jose State 58: Elijah Brown scored 21 points for the host Lobos (1510, 8-4 Mountain West), who broke a two-game losing streak and ended the two-game winning streak of the Spartans (8-17, 3-10).

Colorado 81, Washington 80: Wesley Gordon scored 17 points and grabbed a critical rebound in the final seconds to help the host Buffaloes (19-7, 8-5 Pac-12) hold off a furious rally from

the Huskies (15-10, 7-6).

WOMEN

#4 Baylor 66, Texas Tech 36: Nina Davis had 21 points and 12 rebounds for the visiting Lady Bears (25-1, 12-1).

Bay Area: Stella Beck had 27 points and St. Mary’s (18-6, 9-4 WCC) won 91-81 at Loyola Marymount (9-16, 5-9). ... Taylor Proctor had 12 points and eight rebounds as USF (15-10, 6-8 WCC) defeated host San Diego (21-5, 11-4) 59-54. ... Makenzi Pulsipher scored 25 points and BYU (22-4, 14-1 WCC) beat visiting Santa Clara (19-6, 10-4) 70-63. ... Jasmine Smith and Nyre Harris each scored 12 points as host San Jose State (10-14, 8-5 Mountain West) won 59-58 over New Mexico (12-11, 5-7).
