SUPER FASHION STATEMENTS
For the non-football fans, the Super Bowl is sometimes seen as “that sports thing in between the national anthem and the halftime show.” This year, the fashions on the celebrity entertainers did not disappoint. Lady Gaga belted out the national anthem in a custom Gucci pantsuit that sparkled like the rockets’ red glare. She complemented the look with matching iridescent eye shadow and blue nails with the kind of big hair finishing it off that brought to mind the grand gals of country music. Halftime headliners Chris Martin and the rest of Coldplay were embellished with arts and crafty rainbows, which looked like something Martin’s kids (with ex Gwyneth Paltrow), Apple and Moses, might have helped make at summer camp. (According to the New York Times’ Vanessa Friedman, Moses helped customize Martin’s Air Jordans.) The multicolored scheme and “believe in love” message was attacked by some on Twitter as “promoting homosexuality” — because everyone knows people become gay through Coldplay’s wardrobe choices. Bruno Mars’ black imitation leather Versace (with plenty of gold chains) winked at the Bay Area’s MC Hammer, both in volume and playfulness: The ’90s are hot, after all!
The halftime highlight for many was Beyoncé, who was seen the night before in Gucci courtside at the Warriors game in Oakland. The singer performed “Formation,” which she released the day before in a couture-rich music video, and wore a DSquared2 black leather jacket over a “Single Ladies” leotard and fishnets. The jacket was crisscrossed with gold straps, recalling Michael Jackson’s 1993 halftime wardrobe. Bey’s backup dancers wore complementary ensembles and made another historic fashion reference with their Black Panther berets. As the dancers created an “X” formation, they raised their fists.
