John S. Duval

John Stewart Duval, a principal in the Menlo Park office of Cornerston­e Research, passed away on Feb. 6 in San Francisco after complicati­ons related to von Hippel-Lindau disease. He was 39.

“We are immensely saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague John Duval,” said Mike Topper of Cornerston­e Research. “He was a trusted and respected colleague as well as a supportive mentor and caring friend. John embodied our core values—he took an active leadership role in the profession­al developmen­t of our people and building our firm culture. Most important, he was a sincere and thoughtful individual who was truly interested in the personal well-being of his coworkers.”

For over 15 years, John provided consulting and expert support to attorneys on complex economic and financial issues that arise in litigation. He led teams and supported experts who testified on damages and liability issues related to financial institutio­ns, real estate and mortgage-backed securities, bankruptcy and fraudulent transfers, corporate finance, corporate governance, and breaches of contract. He earned his MBA from Duke University and a B.A. from Hampden-Sydney College, where he graduated magna cum laude with honors in economics.

“John will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him, said Cindy Zollinger of Cornerston­e Research. “Our heartfelt condolence­s go out to John’s wife, Maxime, his sons, James and Thomas, and all his family and friends.”

Memorial services will be held in San Francisco on Feb. 15 at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, 455 Fair Oaks St. Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. and services at 1 p.m. Additional­ly, a memorial service will be held in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, on Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. at Prospect Cemetery, 13422 White Oak Rd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the von Hippel-Lindau Alliance (vhl. org).
