NEWS OF THE DAY

From Across the Nation

-

1 Mars simulation: Six scientists completed a yearlong Mars simulation Sunday in Hawaii, where they lived in a dome in near isolation. The group lived on a Mauna Loa mountain and could venture outside only while wearing spacesuits. Kim Binsted, principal investigator for the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation, said the researchers are looking forward to getting in the ocean and eating fresh produce and other foods that weren’t available in the dome. Binsted said the simulation was the second longest of its kind after a mission that lasted 520 days in Russia. The Hawaii group managed limited resources while conducting research and working to avoid personal conflicts.

2 Deadly wreck: A Honduran man who had entered the United States illegally drove a bus that hit a fire truck Sunday on an elevated highway near New Orleans, killing two people and injuring dozens, Louisiana State Police said. Trooper Melissa Matey said the driver also did not have a commercial license. The bus was carrying flood recovery workers from New Orleans to Baton Rouge. The dead include a local fire chief, Spencer Chauvin, and an occupant of a car also hit by the bus. The injured include dozens of people on the bus, occupants of three other vehicles, and two firefighters. Most injuries were minor to moderate. Troopers are investigating whether the bus driver was employed by the owners, or was working for someone who rented the bus.

3 Broadcaster steps down: Charles Osgood, who has said “good morning” to his audience every Sunday for 22 years, is about to say “goodbye” as host of “CBS News Sunday Morning” in September. He announced his scheduled Sept. 25 farewell on Sunday’s edition. But after that, he won’t be absent from the program, he assured viewers, explaining he will be on hand for occasional appearances. “For years now, people — even friends and family — have been asking me why I continue doing this, considering my age,” the 83-yearold Osgood said. “It’s just that it’s been such a joy doing it!” No successor has been named.

4 Yellowstone fire: Firefighters chopped down trees and searched for hotspots on steep hillsides Sunday as they battled a wildfire that has blocked an entrance to Yellowstone National Park. The fire that began last month in neighboring Grand Teton National Park is blocking Yellowstone’s south entrance, near the resort town of Jackson, Wyo. Fire crews have begun working on a fuel break on the park’s western boundary to help reduce the risk of wildfire for the community of West Yellowstone, Mont., which is about 4 miles from the fire.

5 Student slain: An Ithaca College student was fatally stabbed and another student was injured in a fight on Cornell University’s campus in upstate New York. Both schools posted statements saying the two students were stabbed around 2 a.m. Sunday during a large altercation. Anthony Nazaire, 19, of Brooklyn was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Ithaca police are leading the investigation.

6 Injured firefighter: A firefighter who was injured in a fall while battling a blaze at a condominium in Fullerton (Orange County) is expected to make a full recovery. The male firefighter fell from a secondfloor roof onto an adjacent first-floor roof early Sunday, said Battalion Chief John Stokes. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
