O’Connor, Sophie (née Ofelia) Sophie O’Connor, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2016, at Mission Hospice House in San Mateo.

Sophie was born in San Francisco on October 29, 1928. She was married to Ed O’Connor for 68 years, following a two year courtship that began when they sat next to each other at the Granada Theatre in SF. Sophie graduated from Balboa High School. She worked in the insurance industry and eventually became a successful broker in The City. She retired in 1987 and quickly became a proud and active member of the Mills-Peninsula Hospital Auxiliary (28 years). Sophie and Ed enjoyed a close circle of friends in SF, many happy times at their condo in Lake Tahoe, and extensive travel. The primary focus throughout her life, however, was her family.

Sophie is survived by her devoted husband, Edward O’Connor, who took such wonderful care of her over the past few years. She is also survived by her loving children, Christine Regan (Frank), Nancy Owen (Tom), Judy Passaglia (Frank), and Daniel O’Connor (Camilla); and her adoring grandchildren, Tom Owen (Kristen), Ryan Owen (Nicole), Kathryn Regan McCarthy (JJ), Jennifer Regan, Laura Passaglia McCarthy (Ryan), John Passaglia (Jennifer, fiancé), and Allison O’Connor. Sophie’s seven great-grandchildren were an immeasurable source of joy: Connor and Kenna Owen, James and Cora Owen, Barrett and Mills McCarthy, and Stella McCarthy. Sophie was predeceased by her parents, Grace and Angelo Barca, her stepfather, Amerigo Cottini, and her sisters, Josephine Barca Sebille and Lillian Barca Giuli. Sophie will be greatly missed by many other family members and friends.

The family wishes to acknowledge with much gratitude, Dr. Donald Ho, her physician and friend. Dr. Ho was consistently respectful and empathetic to Sophie, and we will never forget the many acts of kindness that he extended to her.

Family and friends are invited to the Memorial Mass at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church, 300 Alameda de las Pulgas, San Mateo, on Wednesday, August 31, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. If you wish to remember Sophie with a donation, please consider Mission Hospice in San Mateo (1670 South Amphlett Blvd., Suite 300, San Mateo, CA 94402) or Immaculate Conception Academy (3625 24th Street, SF, CA 94110).
