She was born Jane Teresa Doherty February 8, 1917, in Tacoma, Washington, the oldest of five children. She attended Marylhurst College in Oregon before graduating from Seattle College (now Seattle University) in 1938.

She met her husband Jim while they both worked at the naval shipyard in Bremerton, Washington, during World War Two. They settled in California, living in Redwood City, Sacramento, and San Francisco, where she lived for the last 39 years of her life. She and Jim were active members of Star of the Sea parish. The family also lived for a period in Reno, Nevada.

Wherever she lived Jane was active in her parishes and the schools her children attended. She was a lifelong Democrat who was known to take her children to a political rally or two. She was an avid bridge player, playing with various groups into her 90s. She loved to read, to travel, to debate the issue of the day, but most of all she loved her family. She especially doted on her six grandchildren.

The family is grateful for Connie Averion, Josefa Ledesma, and Mirella Sanchez who helped care for Jane in the final years of her life.
