What’s on today

- — David Wiegand

Wait. What? Media Rays? What is that?

Media Rays is the rebranded Watch Box. We figured if ABC Family can start calling itself Freeform, whatever that means, Watchbox can become Media Rays. The content will be the same, which is to say only as good as the TV offerings for each particular day. As usual, the column will appear in Datebook Mondays through Thursdays, with the Thursday column devoted to what’s on TV for the coming weekend.

Here are a few rays for Monday, Aug. 29: “The Fashion Police” weigh in on the hits, misses, misters and more from Sunday, Aug. 28’s “MTV Video Music Awards” with a special on E at 8 p.m. National finals week on “American Ninja Warriors” might be less bloody on NBC at 8 p.m. The fourth season summer finale of “The Fosters” airs on Freeform at 8 p.m. Season nine of “Fast n’ Loud” kicks off on the Discovery Channel at 9 p.m. You know that old saying about fish and house guests? Then can anyone tell me why “Catfish” is still on? Anyway, MTV assembled a one-hour special on “The Untold Stories” from the show at 10 p.m.

The second season finale of “The Making of the Mob: Chicago” airs on AMC at 10 p.m.

TV NEWS

I have to confess I was worried that Starz would kill off another one of my favorite shows. There was no specific reason, but I’m still feeling the loss of

“Boss” from several years ago. But to my delight, the network has OKd a fourth season of “Survivor’s Remorse,” the terrific basketball-themed sitcom about a gifted young player who has to cope with overnight success in the pros.

It’s as much about Cam Calloway’s (Jesse Usher) family as it is about him. If you’ve been watching this season, you know the show lost a major supporting player. I won’t spoil it for those who have it stored up on their TiVos, but although the loss was a big one, the show remains a great ensemble piece.

As for authenticity? Well, LeBron James is among the executive producers, and he knows something about pro basketball.

Anyway, no need for any remorse about this show’s fate. Joseph Fiennes has joined the cast of Hulu’s forthcoming adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.” He’ll play Commander Fred Waterford in the 10-episode series, set for release next year. Elisabeth Moss heads the cast.
