Multilayered piece ‘a sensory journey’

- — Leba Hertz

Jess Curtis/Gravity pairs with disabled artist Claire Cunningham of Great Britain for the world premiere of “The Way You Look (at me) Tonight,” in a co-presentation by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and CounterPulse.

The performance piece is described as “a social sculpture; a sensory journey for two performers and audience.” It involves dancing, singing and storytelling with live music and video.

Joining the Curtis-Cunningham collaboration are composer Matthias Herrman, dramaturg Luke Pell, video artist Yoann Trellu, and author and philosopher of perception Alva Noë.

Cunningham, who usually dances solo because of difficult interaction due to osteoporosis, says that “with Jess there is a foundation of trust and safety that actually creates opportunity to push boundaries, dynamics and risk.”
