Kelly wasn’t in on Davis’ decision

- By Eric Branch

Head coach Chip Kelly said it was his understanding that right tackle Anthony Davis retired Monday because of “injuries,” but Kelly did not speak to Davis about his decision to leave the NFL for the second time in 15 months.

Kelly said Davis informed general manager Trent Baalke about his decision. Kelly said he has since tried to contact Davis, but they have not connected.

“I did not talk to Anthony,” Kelly said. “He came in and talked to Trent. I did not see him. Trent came down and told me what transpired.”

Davis, who had missed the past two games after suffering a concussion in practice, said on Twitter on Monday that he wanted his “mind intact.” Davis left the NFL after an injuryplagued 2014 season in which he missed four games with the first concussion of his football career.

Meanwhile, Kelly said left guard Zane Beadles would continue to assume Davis’ former spot as the emergency tackle and guard/center Marcus Martin and rookie guard Joshua Garnett would be the backup linemen on game days.

Beadles played tackle at Utah and started six games at right tackle for the Broncos as a rookie in 2010.

Kelly said Martin had to be active on game day because he is the only backup capable of playing center. Garnett, the No. 28 pick from Stanford, has been getting the nod over rookie tackle John Theus ,a fifth-round selection. Coach’s secret: On the back of the playsheet Kelly holds on the sideline during games is a red “S” and a green “8.” Why? “It’s just to cover up because they used to try to zoom in on our game plan,” Kelly said. “So I’m trying to cover up what our game plan looks like.”

OK. Fair enough. But why the “S” and “8?” Is it random?

“No, that’s not random,” Kelly said. “Just means something to me. It’s a personal thing.” Injury report: Tight end Vance McDonald (hip) was on the practice field for the first time this week, but he clearly still was hampered by his injury during individual drills. McDonald retreated to a side field to work with a trainer at the start of team drills and was listed as limited on the injury report . ... Tight end Garrett Celek (back) remained limited.
