Tigers, in playoff hunt, postponed by weather

-

Thursday’s game between the Cleveland Indians and Tigers in Detroit was postponed because of bad weather, a move that could force the teams to squeeze in a makeup game next week if it needs to be played because of postseason implications.

The Indians and Tigers played a rain-shortened game Wednesday night, which Detroit won 6-3 in five innings, but the scheduled series finale Thursday did not get started. It was called after a delay of 4 hours, 13 minutes.

Cleveland has clinched the AL Central. The Tigers began Thursday one game behind Baltimore for the American League’s second wild-card spot.

Detroit opens a three-game series at Atlanta on Friday night, and Cleveland starts a three-game set at Kansas City. The Tigers and Indians would need to play a makeup game Monday if it could affect who makes the postseason or how teams are seeded. Fernandez laid to rest: Jose Fernandez’s last formal farewell came at a private Catholic mass attended by about 300 friends and relatives in Miami. Those in attendance included Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred, busloads of current and former Miami Marlins players, former Marlins manager Jack McKeon and two Hall of Famers, Marlins executives Tony Perez and Andre Dawson.

Fernandez, 24, and two friends died in a boat crash early Sunday near Miami Beach. Fernandez was considered one of the best young pitchers in the game. Briefly: Jean Segura’s bid to break Arizona’s record for most hits in a season was slowed by a cramp. The second baseman left the Diamondbacks’ 5-3 loss at Washington in the seventh inning, leaving him at 201 hits after getting a single in the third. His hit total is the second-highest by a player for a franchise that began play in 1998. Luis Gonzalez had 206 hits in 1999 . ... Former majorleague catcher-first baseman Jesus Montero was suspended 50 games after testing positive for the stimulant dimethylbutylamine, his second penalty for a banned substance. Montero, who played last season with Seattle, spent this season with Toronto’s Triple-A Buffalo team, batting .317 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs. In August 2013, Montero drew a 50-game drug ban; he was among several players disciplined by MLB for their relationship to Biogenesis of America, a Florida antiaging clinic accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs.
