Brad Marchand scored a shorthanded goal with 43.1 seconds left and Canada rallied past Team Europe 2-1 in Toronto to win the World Cup of Hockey.

“It’s the biggest stage in the world right now and it’s an incredible honor,” Marchand said. The Canadians won the best-ofthree finals 2-0, with Sydney Crosby being named the eightteam tournament’s MVP.

Patrice Bergeron tied it with a power-play goal with 2:53 left in the third, and Marchand won it with a shot from the slot. Slovakia’s Zdeno Chara’s first-period goal had given Europe the early lead.

Canada has won 16 straight games, including Olympic gold medals at the Sochi and Vancouver Games, since losing to the U.S. in the 2010 Olympics. College football: Greg Ward Jr. threw for a career-high 389 yards and accounted for five touchdowns in just more than three quarters to help No. 6 Houston beat visiting Connecticut 42-14.

The victory was a bit of redemption for the Cougars (5-0, 2-0 American), whose only loss last season came in a 20-17 defeat by the Huskies (2-3, 0-2) when they were 10-0.

Richmond’s move from special assistant to assistant coach comes just before the start of Mullin’s second season as the head coach at his alma mater. Richmond, a five-time All-NBA selection, played three seasons alongside Mullin with Golden State and won a title with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2002.
