High: Calistoga Ranch: The privacy and price point appeal to the royal families of Hollywood, Silicon Valley and actual monarchies. The amenities of the 157-acre, wooded hillside resort — lakeside restaurant, spa, hiking trails, pool, private-label estate Cabernet and loaner Mercedes models — are available solely to guests. Valets offer shuttles to and from the 50 California lodge-style rooms, most with discreetly placed hot tubs and all to be renovated starting in January. Low: El Bonita: To score a room at St. Helena’s often sold-out budget inn, general manager Pierrette Therene recommends calling 72 hours in advance — when free cancellations end — but last minute may work, too. The deepest bargains are the poolside rooms, but the quieter, two-story Homestead and Garden units still cost less than $300 a night on peak weekends. Don’t let the drab exterior fool you; renovated rooms feature up-to-date decor.

From $190 weekend (two-night minimum for Saturday arrivals), $140 midweek; winter, from $120 weekend, $100 midweek. Pets $25 per night.

Low: The Bergson: The modern, two-story farmhouse inn just off Highway 29 in Calistoga gleams with the results of a twoyear renovation. The new owners kept the handsome antique furnishings while upgrading carpeting, linens, flat-screen TVs and the like. The airy, modern baths sport plush robes and L’Occitane products; standouts on the continental breakfast include Cousteau pastries from Healdsburg and house-made granola.

From $185 weekend (two-night minimum for Saturday stays), $145 midweek; winter, from $165 weekend (two-night minimum select dates), $135 midweek.
