Walter Carl “Bud” Braunschweig

Oct. 21, 1929 - Jan. 4, 2017

-

Walter Carl “Bud” Braunschweig passed away at his home in Volcano, with his family by his side on January 4, 2017. He was born in San Francisco on October 21, 1929, to Walter and Vera (Belstedt) Braunschweig.

Walt grew up in the Bayview District of San Francisco, graduating from Mission High School. Drafted by the US Army, he served two years in Korea during the Korean War. He started his career in the San Francisco Police Department walking a beat in the Tenderloin District. He then became a founding member of the Police Canine Unit. His next move was to the TAC Squad and finally to the ID Bureau, from which he retired as a lieutenant after 28 years of service.

Walt was always a sports fan and a devoted father. He loved coaching his children’s sports teams, cooking, working around the house and just being with his family. He loved animals and always had a dog by his side.

Anxious to move to the “country,” he and his wife moved to Amador County after he retired. It was there that his love for flags began. He became a vexillologist, one who studies flags. Walt collected flags from all over the world and every branch of the military, and raised them often in town and at home.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sherrill (Cookie Wood), his daughter Kali of Oakland, his son Kyle (Souky) of Novato and three granddaughters, Skyler, Scarlett and Kaylani, his sister Peggy Zanatta of Pleasanton, a niece and several nephews. His sister, Lois McEvoy, predeceased him.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Walt’s name to Hospice of Amador and Calaveras, P. O. Box 595, Jackson, CA 95642 or to Tri-County Wildlife, P O Box 367, Jackson, CA 95641.

There will be a celebration of Walt’s life at the Volcano Union Inn on January 28, 2017 from 1 to 4 pm.
