Bears cold again in a lost weekend

-

BOULDER, Colo. — At this point, Cal will be lucky to get a 20th win at next week’s Pac-12 tournament. The Bears’ offensive woes are coming at the wrong time.

“You just can’t keep getting stops and stops without scoring,” said guard Jabari Bird after Cal’s 54-46 loss at Colorado. “We’ve got to score baskets, too.”

Indeed, the Bears’ trademark defense was on display throughout the game, as Cal held the Buffaloes to a season low. But the Bears’ offense failed to do its part. Cal, coming off a 30-point loss at Utah in which it was held to 44 points, shot just 27.3 percent from the field.

Still, Cal (19-11, 10-8 Pac-12) had a chance to win at the end until Colorado’s Derrick White made a heavily contested, turnaround three-pointer with 20.6 seconds left. White finished with 17 points in the regularseason finale for both teams.

“Obviously, White made a big three-pointer that changed the game,” Cal coach Cuonzo Martin said. “I thought we did a good job of defending him. He just made a big-time shot.”

Ivan Rabb had 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Bears, who missed a chance to notch their second consecutive 20-win campaign. Bird also scored 11 and Grant Mullins added 10 for Cal, which has lost five of its past six.

Colorado (18-13, 8-10) actually could be a factor in the Pac-12 tournament, which starts Wednesday in Las Vegas. Since starting conference play with seven losses, the Buffaloes have gone 8-3.
