Capitals take advantage in OT

Nicklas Backstrom scored a power-play goal in overtime to lift the Washington Capitals over the Philadelph­ia Flyers 2-1 on Saturday night and extend their franchise-record home winning streak to 15.

Backstrom ended the Capitals’ power-play frustratio­ns by beating Steve Mason 3:25 into overtime for his 20th goal of the season. It came with Flyers defenseman Michael Del Zotto in the penalty box for holding, the 12th minor penalty of the game.

Dmitry Orlov also scored for NHL-leading Washington, which got 30 saves from Braden Holtby. Sean Couturier snapped out of his offensive slump to score Philadelph­ia’s goal.

The Flyers went 0for-6 on the power play and are 0-for-15 this season against the Capitals.

Canucks 4, Kings 3: Sven Baertschi scored twice, Ryan Miller made 41 saves and visiting Vancouver ended a

four-game losing streak. Henrik Sedin had a goal, Nikolay Goldobin scored in his Canucks debut and Bo Horvat had three assists as Vancouver won in regulation for just the second time in its past nine games. Trevor Lewis and Anze Kopitar each scored a powerplay goal, Alec Martinez scored a short-handed goal and Ben Bishop made 17 saves in his home debut for Los Angeles.

Blackhawks 5, Predators 3: Brian Campbell scored with 1:05 remaining to snap a tie in the seventh straight win for visiting Chicago. Patrick Kane scored twice, including an empty-netter after Campbell’s goal. Viktor Arvidsson scored twice for Nashville.

Lightning 2, Sabres 1: Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov scored in the shootout for visiting Tampa Bay; Tyler Johnson scored in regulation and Andrei Vasilevski­y made 31 saves. The Sabres were without leading scorer Kyle Okposo, who has injured ribs and will be out at least a week.

Jets 6, Avalanche 1: Blake Wheeler and Nikolaj Ehlers each had a goal and two assists for the hosts. Making his 10th straight start in goal,

Connor Hellebuyck almost had his second straight shutout for the Jets until Gabriel Landeskog scored with 15.4 seconds left in the game. Patrik Laine scored his NHL rookielead­ing 32nd goal.

Bruins 3, Devils 2: Ryan Spooner scored midway through the third period in host Boston’s eighth victory in 10 games under interim coach Bruce Cassidy. Brandon Carlo and Torey Krug also scored for the Bruins, and backup goalie Anton Khudobin stopped 15 shots. Cassidy took over for fired coach Claude Julien on Feb. 7.

Stars 2, Panthers 1: John Klingberg scored the winning goal with 1:07 left for the visitors, with a shot from the right circle that went high into the net over the shoulder of James Reimer.

Senators 3, Blue Jackets 2: Zack Smith scored a shorthande­d goal in the third period, and Viktor Stalberg got his first goal since joining host Ottawa ahead of Wednesday’s trade deadline.

Canadiens 4, Rangers 1: Carey Price made 26 saves as visiting Montreal extended its winning streak to five games.

Oilers 4, Red Wings 3: Connor McDavid blazed past a pair of defenders and beat goalie Petr Mrazek on the backhand for his 22nd goal of the season just two minutes into the game, and added an assist for the hosts.
