Dona Hoard

January 4, 1943 - February 14, 2017

-

Dona passed away peacefully on February 14, 2017 with her children, Daniel and Eliza, and her life partner, Bob, by her side. She fought cancer with quiet dignity and strong resolve to live every day to its fullest.

Dona’s brilliant mind, larger-than-life personality, deep love for her family and strong affection for her friends were on constant display throughout her life. She was fearless, honest and compassionate, and never happier than when she was sharing stories and pictures of her kids and grandkids. The pearls of wisdom she imparted along the way are often repeated and will never be forgotten.

Dona was born in Brooklyn, New York and spent her youth there and in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dona graduated from Vassar College in 1964 and was awarded a Master of Public Administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1965. She then went on to a distinguished career in housing and community development, first as a consultant for MKGK then as the Community Development Director for the City of Alameda. Following her retirement from Alameda she ran her own business, Management on Demand, using her expertise to help cities solve problems and fill temporary department head positions. Dona was appointed to the State Board of Engineers in 1981 and proudly served her term as the only woman and non-engineer appointed to that position. She lived in Oakland, California for most of her adult life and was a huge supporter of the city’s diversity and eclectic culture.

Dona is survived by her son Daniel Hoard, her daughter Eliza Hoard Adcox, her life partner Robert Hamilton, her five grandchildren, Kevin, Sierra, James, Annabelle and Bailey, her brother David, many loving relatives and a large extended family. Dona was predeceased by her father, Simon Mazer, and her mother, Marcelle Felser.

Dona’s wit, charm and intelligence will be greatly missed by her loved ones and many friends. If you wish, you may honor Dona by donating to one of many organizations she believed in and supported, including the American Cancer Society, the American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood.
