A 24-year-old man was fatally shot by a police officer in Santa Clara after the man’s parents called 911 to report he was acting erratically, authorities said Friday.

An officer shot the man Thursday evening after confronting him near his family’s home and trying to subdue him with an electronic stun gun without success, authorities said.

The incident was recorded by a vest camera worn by the officer, and the footage is being reviewed by the Santa Clara County district attorney’s office, officials said.

Officers responded to the family’s home on Deborah Drive at Monroe Street at about 5 p.m., said police Capt. Wahid Kazem. The parents called 911, saying their son had cut himself in the chest with a knife, was armed with a handgun and had barricaded himself in his bedroom, Kazem said.

The son wasn’t there when police arrived. Officers searched the area and found him under a nearby overpass, Kazem said.

He said officers had tried to speak to the man but that because of his “erratic behavior,” they deployed a stun gun on him.

Kazem said the man advanced on Officer Colin Stewart, a 13-year law-enforcement veteran, who shot the man “in fear for his safety.”

The name of the dead man has not been been released.

Police did not find a weapon on him, but a bloody knife was found on the trail on which he was running, Kazem said.

Stewart was placed on administrative leave, a routine procedure, while police and the district attorney investigate.
