U.S. faces must-win game after 6-5 loss

-

Yadier Molina and Puerto Rico are moving on to the World Baseball Classic semifinals after scoring four runs in the first inning and then holding on for a wild 6-5 win against the United States in San Diego on Friday night.

The final semifinal spot will go to the winner of Saturday night’s game between the United States and the Dominican Republic. That team will play Japan on Tuesday night.

Buster Posey hit his second homer of the WBC, but a U.S rally fell just short in the top of the ninth. Brandon Crawford hit a two-run triple to the leftcenter gap off Edwin Diaz with two outs to pull the Americans within a run. Diaz then struck out Josh Harrison to send the Puerto Ricans into a celebration on the infield. MLB: The father of Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts died at age 68. The team announced Waymon Roberts’ death, but gave no further details.

Texas Rangers pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez has been diagnosed with a partial tear of a ligament in his right elbow and will not throw for at least six weeks.

Right-hander Logan Ondrusek, due to have his elbow examined next week by Dr. James Andrews, was released by the Baltimore Orioles. Ondrusek agreed in December to a nonguaranteed $650,000, one-year contract. If doctors determine Ondrusek is injured, there might be a grievance arguing he should not be released but instead placed on the disabled list.
