Jim Young died peacefully at home March 8 at age 97, after a lifetime of helping others.

He was born and raised in Depression-era Nebraska, and his life followed the arc typical of our country’s “greatest generation.” He overcame immense obstacles to realize his dreams, working his way through college and medical school--even helping to build a portion of the great Alaskan railroad.

He completed his medical residency in Hawaii at the prestigious Honolulu Medical Group, beginning a love affair with the islands that would last his entire life. He later became Chief Resident in Internal Medicine at UC San Francisco, then served his country in the US Army as the Chief Medical Standards Officer of the European Command, stationed in Germany in the years following WWII.

He met Doris Ann in Honolulu at the end of the war. They married and eventually moved to the Bay Area to start a family, living first in Piedmont and later moving to Hillsborough in 1963. They built a rich and happy life there, until her death in 1994.

He always knew, even as a child, that he wanted to be a doctor. Practicing medicine was his life’s great passion, first as an internist and later as an allergist and immunologist. A gifted and dedicated physician, he maintained a successful practice in San Mateo for over 40 years, helping thousands of patients.

He began a new chapter in his life when he married his second wife, Stephanie, and they enjoyed 16 happy years together. His family -- Stephanie, his daughters, Tiffany, Janet and Carol, his son-in-law, Jim, his grandchildren, Robert and Jenny -- his colleagues and patients, and his lifelong friends will honor his memory.

In a life filled with achievement, he will be remembered most of all for his kindness.
