Best players from southern schools

- — Mitch Stephens

A look at a dozen of the best players traveling north this week for the state high school basketball championship games at Golden 1 Center, Sacramento:

Megan Anderson (Clovis West-Fresno):

The 6-foot-1 senior leads a balanced attack for the Golden Eagles, who are ranked seventh nationally by MaxPreps. The San Jose Statebound forward is one of five scholarship players on the team: Danae Marquez (SJSU), Sarah Bates (UC Santa Barbara), Bre’yanna Sanders (Arizona State) and Tess Amundsen (Boise State).

Jemarl Baker (Roosevelt-Eastvale):

The 6-4 guard, who has committed to Cal, is one of the best pure shooters in Southern California. He averages 17.3 points and 4.3 assists per game.

Myles Franklin (Villa Park):

The Northeastern commit is a slender 6-3 point guard who, according to West Coast scout

Gerry Freitas,

“does a nice job making plays for himself and others on a consistent basis.”

Alyssa Maxey (Rolling Hills-San Pedro):

The 5-8 freshman guard averages more than 22 points per game for the Huskies. She opened regional play two weeks ago with games of 34 and 28 points.

Matthew Mitchell (Roosevelt):

The 6-5 guard is a matchup nightmare. The Cal State Fullerton-bound senior averages 25.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. “Fullerton is getting a steal,” Freitas said.

Miles Norris (Helix-La Mesa):

The 6-10, 190-pound forward is one of the top juniors in the country. Oregon and Arizona are at the top of his recruiting list.

Kezie Okpala (Esperanza-Anaheim):

The 6-8 Stanford-bound guard averages 30.7 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. “He’s long, athletic, handles the ball well and can get to the basket,” Freitas said. “It’s rare for a kid that size to be an all-around scorer like that.”

Ethan Thompson (Bishop Montgomery-Torrance):

The 6-foot-4 combination guard is the best all-around player Doug

Mitchell said he has coached in his 28-year career. Headed to Oregon State, Thompson is the leading scorer (22) for the nation’s No. 4 team, which takes on Woodcreek-Roseville and 6-11

Jordan Brown, the nation’s No. 2 ranked junior according to 247Sports.
