Chicago’s Anderson gets 6-year contract

The rebuilding Chicago White Sox and promising shortstop Tim Anderson agreed Tuesday to a $25 million, sixyear contract.

The deal comes after an encouragin­g debut last season.

Anderson, selected 17th overall in the 2013 draft, was promoted in June after Jimmy Rollins was released. Anderson hit .283 with 10 stolen bases, nine homers and 30 RBIs in 99 games. He also struck out 117 times and walked just 13.

Anderson, 23, will receive $850,000 in 2017, $1 million in 2018, $1.4 million in 2019, $4 million in 2020, $7.25 million in 2021 and $9.5 million in 2022. The deal also includes club options of $12.5 million for 2023 and $14 million for 2024. If either is declined, Anderson gets $1 million. Gregorius out for April: Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius is expected to miss the first month of the regular season because of a strained right shoulder sustained in the World Baseball Classic.

The Yankees have backup shortstops Ronald Torreyes and Ruben Tejada in camp, along with utilityman Tyler Wade and top prospect Gleyber Torres. Second baseman Starlin Castro likely will get some time at short over the final week and a half of spring training. Spring training highlights: Mike Fiers struck out five in four innings in Houston’s 2-1 win over Miami. Astros second baseman Jose Altuve, who hit .286 in seven games for Venezuela at the WBC, went 1-for-4 and is 2-for-20 this spring . ... In Baltimore’s 5-4 loss to Toronto, Ubaldo Jimenez gave up four runs on five hits and three walks in four innings. He has yielded 10 earned runs in 10 innings in three starts. Chris Davis hit his first homer for the Orioles . ... John Jaso homered in the Pirates’ 5-4 win over the Rays. Briefly: Texas catcher Robinson Chirinos signed a contract through 2018 that includes a club option for 2019. Chirinos caught the season openers in 2015 and 2016 and now is a backup to Jonathan Lucroy . ... A memorial service for the father of manager Dave Roberts will be Thursday. Waymon Roberts died Friday at age 68. No cause of death was given. Dave Roberts will return to camp in Arizona on Friday.
