Little journalism by Brady suspect

The Mexican media executive suspected of stealing Tom Brady’s jersey went to the Super Bowl as a working journalist but spent the week collecting selfies and autographs from football greats and boasting that he was there as a fan, colleagues said.

Mexican journalist­s who were in Houston for the game and interacted with Martin Mauricio Ortega, former director of the tabloid La Prensa, said he brought multiple NFL memorabili­a items, including a Kurt Warner jersey he hoped to sell to the former quarterbac­k for thousands of dollars.

Carolina Panthers quarterbac­k Cam Newton will undergo surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder. He is expected to be ready for the start of training camp in July.

Running back Shaun Draughn, who played for the 49ers the past season and a half, agreed to a contract with the New York Giants.

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed free-agent defensive end Tyson Alualu, a Cal alum, to a two-year contract.

Linebacker Manti Te’o agreed to a two-year contract with the New Orleans Saints. Te’o played 38 games during four seasons with the Chargers.

College basketball: Rice head coach Mike Rhoades was named head coach at VCU, replacing Will Wade, who resigned to take the same position at LSU.

Vlad Brodziansk­y scored 20 points to lead host TCU (22-15) past Richmond 86-68 and into the NIT semifinals. Also advancing to next week’s final four in New York was Georgia Tech (20-15), which got 20 points and eight blocks from Ben Lammers in a 74-66 win at Mississipp­i.
