John H.J. Cashman, 81, passed away on March 10, 2017 in his home in Alameda, CA.

John was born John Hosman Cashman on August 12, 1935 in Newburypor­t, MA to Beatrice Hosman and Joseph Thomas Cashman. John attended and graduated from Immaculate Conception Schools. After attending school John worked at Anna Jacques Hospital. From 1955-1958 he served in the Army and was stationed in Germany as an intelligen­ce analyst. John then moved to California living first in San Francisco and later in Alameda.

John worked as a real estate broker from 1980 until his death. He was the founder/owner of The Cashman Team, Inc. serving clients in Alameda, the East Bay and San Francisco. John was a respected force in the East Bay and the California real estate communitie­s and served as the Regional Chair and Director of the California Associatio­n of Realtors and was President of the Berkeley Associatio­n of Realtors in 1998. He was a former owner of Keller Williams in Berkeley and and honorary member for life of the California Associatio­n of Realtors. John also managed the former Prudential offices located in Kensington and Albany/ Berkeley, CA.

John actively supported many charities by raising and donating money and dedicating his time. He cycled 11 times from San Francisco to Los Angeles (545 miles) to raise funds for the SF Aids Foundation. He was also a member of the SF Gay Men’s Chorus for 15 years and sang with them at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall and Davies Symphony Hall. He also served as a board member on the SFGMC’s Golden Gate Performing Art’s, Inc. and was an active supporter of the Altarena Playhouse. In his spare time John enjoyed travelling (especially to Mexico and Tahoe), biking, swimming, running, parasailin­g, skiing and zip lining. All who came across his path knew John for his gregarious personalit­y, sense of humor, generosity, and kindness.

John was preceded in death by his sisters Mary, Geraldine, Eleanor and Patricia and his brother, the Rev. Jeremiah Cashman, and his companion Harvey Floyd.

John is survived by his brother, Joseph Cashman (Edith), companion, Jack Ledbetter, many nieces and nephews, cousins and his favorite cousin, Ginny McDonald, and good friend Mary Borin.

A funeral mass will be held at Saint Joseph’s Basilica in Alameda on April 8, 2017 at 11 am with a Celebratio­n of Life Reception to follow. Burial will take place in Newburypor­t, MA on May 20, 2017.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be given to the S.F. Gay Men’s Chorus or Saint Joseph’s Basilica in Alameda, CA.
