Mitsuko “Miki” Ojima

Mitsuko Ojima of San Mateo, Ca. passed away peacefully on March 14, 2017 at the age of 96. Miki was born in Portland OR to Yasuo and Kumaye Sugimoto. She had four sisters, one of whom, Martha, survives her. She was preceded in death by Ayako, Yuriko and Sachiko.

Miki was living and working in Portland at the outbreak of World War II. She was interned at Minidoka Relocation Center in Idaho, where she remained until she was released to work in the war industry in Chicago.

In Chicago, Miki met Toshio Ojima, whom she married in October of 1947. They had two daughters, Janice and Wanda. The family moved to San Mateo in 1964. Miki worked for many years at Continenta­l Beauty Supply. She enjoyed her retirement over the last several years, traveling to Japan, Hawaii, Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas and Reno.

Miki was predecease­d by Toshio in 2014. She is survived by her daughters, Janice O’Sullivan (Larry) and Wanda McMullin (John). She leaves her grandchild­ren, Shari Schreier (Troy), Christophe­r O’Sullivan (Maria), Laurette Grant (Scott), Megan O’Sullivan, Joshua McMullin and Allison Fioresi (Colin). She will be missed by her great-grandchild­ren: Taylor, Troy, Ty, Tate, Sadie, Sean, Brandon, Kaitlyn, and Luke. Miki has many nieces and nephews in California and the Midwest.

Services will be held at the San Mateo Buddhist Temple on April 17th at 10:30.

In lieu of koden memorial contributi­ons may be made to the San Mateo Japanese Community Center or Kimochi - San Mateo.
