SWINGIN’ RAT PACK VIBE STILL ALIVE AFTER LATEST POLISH OF RIVIERA PALM SPRINGS.

- — Jeanne Cooper

The Rat Pack of Frankie, Sammy and Dino may be gone, but their former desert hangout, opened in 1959, entertains with a renewed swing. After undergoing a sweeping $70 million makeover in 2008, the Riviera Palm Springs finished a multimillion-dollar update last year that added a second pool bar and a dazzling Morocco-meets-mid-century-modern lobby, among other flourishes. The playful, plush vibe extends across the property, a destination in its own right as well a convenient launchpad for all things Palm Springs.

Setting: Just north of downtown, the surprisingly sprawling, 21-acre resort hides behind shrubberies and palm trees along East Vista Chino Drive (Highway 111) and North Indian Canyon Drive. Upper floors and the two main pool decks offer inspiring mountain views.

The appeal: Boutique chic at a more affordable bighotel price. With 398 guest rooms spread over eight buildings (arrayed like a daisy with two stems), a halfdozen restaurants and bars, and three meandering pools, the Riviera disperses its guests well yet keeps a pleasant energy. Whimsical retro furniture, eye-catching eclectic artwork and other cheeky postmodern decor also radiate a youthful esprit, while leather armchairs and headboards, candy-colored throw pillows, deep soaking tubs and high-end linens add a touch of indulgence.

Insider’s tips: Avoid downtown parking issues by taking advantage of the resort bikes or the free Buzz trolley (11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday-Sunday, http://new.buzzps. com). The Destination PSP store off the lobby is a delightful trove of souvenirs, necessities and Palm Springs history; many purchases benefit local nonprofits. In the elegantly remodeled Azure Spa, try the watsu water therapy massage.

Good to know: The Riviera is now part of Starwood’s Tribute Portfolio group, with special discounts for Starwood members, but like many hotels in the area (some with hardly any amenities) it charges a hefty resort fee. The $35 nightly charge here includes parking, Wi-Fi and bike usage, as well as other items formerly considered standard provisions.

Details: 1600 N. Indian Canyon Dr., Palm Springs. (760) 327-8311, www.rivierapalmsprings.com. From $169, plus $35 daily resort fee.
