San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus finds ‘Paradise’ in song

- — David Wiegand

The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus is aiming for perfection with its spring concert, “Paradise Found,” opening Thursday, March 30, and continuing through Saturday, April 1.

The 250-voice chorus’ program includes Broadway show tunes, Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World,” the 19th century hymn “Nearer My God to Thee” and an onstage water ballet at the recently remodeled Herbst Theatre.

The program includes the world premiere of the 15-minute work “Paradiso” by James Granville Eakin III, the chorus’ composer in residence. The piece is based on the work of Dante.

Also on the bill: “Sanctuary,” by Ola Gjeilo.

The chorus, under the direction of Artistic Director Timothy Seelig, will also welcome the famed Na Lei Hulu I Ka Weiku Dance Company as special guest artists.
