Film festival covers environment, UFOs

- — G. Allen Johnson

Got to hand it to a film festival that is hosting a free UFO symposium — with free lunch, no less.

After its single-film opening night on Wednesday, March 29, the Sonoma International Film Festival gets into full swing on Thursday, March 30, going from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. at seven venues. The festival runs through Sunday, April 2.

Highlights include “Afterimage,” the last film from Polish master Andrzej Wajda; “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary”; and an intriguing environmental double feature: the 33-minute “Straws,” about the damaging effect of plastic straws, and “Death by Design,” a feature-length look at the environmental and social downside of our digital devices.

And, as usual at this festival, a plethora of food documentaries.

The panel discussion with UFO experts is at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at Sonoma Community Center. Come in peace.
