Lab workshop aims to channel creativity

- — Charles Desmarais

“Get off the Internet and social media more in 2017,” writes Beth Pickens, a strategic planning consultant in the arts. “Be in front of other humans more in 2017.”

That’s just one of a number of good ideas contained in a short guide for artists called “Making Art During Fascism.” The pamphlet outlines the core concepts of a workshop Pickens will lead at the Lab on Friday, March 31. (A future workshop will take place at Temescal Art Center in Oakland.)

As she tells it, after the November election, many of her artist clients were saying things like “maybe I should quit making art” and “it’s kind of selfish for me to focus on my art now.” Her key message: “DO NOT STOP MAKING ART.” The workshop is meant to help artists think through ways to channel their creativity and energy to incite and inspire.
