A 24-year-old man who died during a shootout with Fremont police Sunday night was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, officials said.

An autopsy revealed that the man, identified as Roger Perez of Orinda, took his life, according to the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau. Fremont Police Department officials previously had said two officers fatally shot Perez after he fired at them.

The autopsy determined that Perez suffered no other gunshot wounds to his body, according to the coroner’s bureau.

Fremont police responded to an emergency around 11:30 p.m. Sunday when a police officer from the East Bay Regional Park District called for assistance at the parking lot of a 7-Eleven on Decoto Road and Fremont Boulevard, police said.

When they arrived, Fremont police spotted Perez fleeing from a vehicle in the parking lot with a firearm, police said.

He ran across Fremont Boulevard to the area behind a Walgreens, where he mounted a “box truck” and opened fire on the responding officers, said Officer Michael Gilfoy, a spokesman for the Fremont Police Department.

Police returned fire and Perez was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was the third officerinvolved shooting in Fremont this year.

The two officers, whose names have not been released, are on administrative leave, per standard protocol while the shooting is being investigated, Gilfoy said.
