Hall of Famer Brock diagnosed with cancer

-

The St. Louis Cardinals say Hall of Fame outfielder Lou Brock recently was diagnosed with bone cancer.

Brock, 77, was supposed to appear at a Busch Stadium event April 25, but that has been canceled while he is undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma.

His left leg was amputated below the knee in late 2015 because of an infection caused by complications with diabetes. He was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes more than 15 years ago and has worn a prosthesis since the amputation to throw out the occasional ceremonial first pitch at St. Louis games.

Brock, who was elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 1985, says he and wife Jackie are thankful for the support they have received. Atlanta stadium ready for opener: The Braves’ new stadium is ready for its first real unveiling. A sellout crowd will be watching when the Braves play their first regular-season game in SunTrust Park against San Diego on Friday night.

After struggling on a long road trip to open the season, the Braves are glad to play in their new home.

“It’ll be fun,” catcher Tyler Flowers said. “The city is excited. Of course, we’re excited. I think everyone is anxious to see the new stadium. We’re excited to play in it.”

It will be the first real test of the suburban park’s ability to accommodate Atlanta’s traffic. The issue was complicated by a fire under an overpass that has shut down a section of I-85, one of the major interstates in the city, for several weeks.

After only 20 years at Turner Field, built for the 1996 Olympics, the Braves moved north to Cobb County. A large complex around the stadium will include a hotel, apartments, restaurants, concert venue, office buildings and other businesses.
