Schedule: Friday through Sunday Post time: 12:45 p.m.

Feature simulcast race: Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby on Saturday at Oaklawn Park

Update: Weather permitting, the turf course will be used Saturday for the first time since Jan. 1. The seventh race is a $20,000 maiden-claimer and the ninth race is a $6,250 claimer — both at 11⁄16 miles. … Kronwall, who has won three straight races, and Midnight Rambler, who has won four of his past five, meet in Sunday’s third event. The 6-furlong starter allowance is restricted to horses that have run for a claiming price of $4,000 or less in 2016-17. … Melanie Rose takes a four-race win streak into Sunday’s fifth event — a $10,000 claimer going 1 mile on grass.

Elsewhere: Jerry Hollendorfer won his third outright Southern California training title with 38 winners — three ahead of Peter Miller — at Santa Anita’s winter meeting, which ended Sunday. It was quite a rebound for the Hall of Famer after a slow second half of 2016. “No matter what happens in my barn, we just keep working at it,” Hollendorfer said. “That’s been the cure for when things aren’t going right — to do what’s been successful.” Hollendorfer previously won titles at the 2015 Del Mar summer meeting and the 201415 Santa Anita winter meeting and tied for two other titles. … Hollendorfer might have his first Kentucky Derby entrant since 2012 in Battle of Midway, who held on gamely for second in the Santa Anita Derby after dueling on the inside of a very fast pace. “We’ll see,” he said. “If (owner Rick Porter) makes this decision, he might choose not to go. It’s just hard to gauge how the Derby is going to come up this year.” … The Arkansas Derby is the final major prep race, and Classic Empire is the 8-5 morning-line favorite in a field of 12. The champion 2-year-old of 2016, Classic Empire has run just once this year, finishing a well-beaten third in the Sam F. Davis Stakes on Feb. 4 and then suffering an abscess in his right front foot. Malagacy is the 2-1 second choice off his Rebel Stakes victory. … My Kentucky Derby top 10: Irish War Cry, Girvin, Always Dreaming, Gormley, Gunnevera, Classic Empire, Thunder Snow, Irap, Malagacy, McCraken. … Hollendorfer runs Spooky Woods in the Grade 3, $400,000 Fantasy Stakes for 3-year-old fillies Friday at Oaklawn Park and Kentuckian and Ike Walker in the Grade 3, $100,000 Los Angeles Stakes for sprinters Saturday at Santa Anita. … After two dull efforts since being switched from trainer Bob Baffert to Art Sherman, Dortmund has been retired. “He’s just not the Dortmund he used to be,” Sherman said of the horse that won eight of 16 starts and earned $1,987,505.
