Robert Denis John O’Leary

-

The community of Noe Valley gave pause on a recent Saturday afternoon and gathered on Jersey Street to mourn the loss of one of the good ones. Robert Denis O’Leary, 51, was taken into God’s grace far too young after a courageous and intense battle with cancer. His booming laughter and vivid storytelling were the hallmark of his presence, thus it was a cruel twist of fate these past few months when the disease silenced his voice. Robert is survived by his friend and partner Amen Kahlon and their cherished daughter Asha.

Robert was a native San Franciscan, the second of four sons born to Rose Marie Doonan O’Leary and the late Jerome O’Leary. Mischievous and daredevilish as a child, there are numerous and legendary “Rob” stories that have become part of family lore and legend. He will be deeply missed by his brothers Sean (Liz), Matt (Janet), and Barry (Sauncey).

Rob was a fun-loving member of a large closeknit Irish family of aunts, uncles and cousins. He was a memorable and loving uncle to Sean Jr, Robert X, Rosemary, Mollie (Andre), Ashley, Michael, Matthew Jr, Paddy and Micky; and smitten grand uncle to Avelyn.

Robert was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps and journeyman member of the Sprinkler Fitters Union Local 483. He was a devoted son and loyal friend, always willing to help anyone in need of a move, a ride somewhere, or something fixed around the house. He had a heart of gold and would be the first to lend the shirt off his back or the last dollar in his pocket.

A Celebration of Life service for Robert will be held on Saturday April 22, 2017 at St. Philip’s Church, 725 Diamond Street at 12 noon. A private interment at Holy Cross Cemetery was attended by his family. In lieu of flowers, please honor Robert by considering making a contribution for the benefit of “Asha O’Leary” - Account #1382524 at the SF Police Credit Union 2550 Irving Street San Francisco, CA 94122.
