Impressive minimalist design

St. Helena contemporary offers spa-like experience

- By Jordan Guinn

Indoor/outdoor living remains a defining characteristic of Northern California luxury living. While the South may have screened porches and the Northeast has sheltered sunrooms, the homes of Wine Country and the Bay Area typically make the most of their temperate climates.

Such is certainly the case for 1318 Stockton St., a palatial contemporary in St. Helena boasting spa-worthy, enticing amenities. Look no further than a central courtyard easily reached from many points within the home.

“I feel like I’m always on the verge of indoors and out at the same time here,” said Mary Moore, the interior designer of the 3,100-squarefoot home. Moore paired with architect Shay Zak on the recently completed property available for $5.2 million.

The seductive minimalism found throughout Zak’s portfolio is on display at Stockton Street as well. A symmetrical facade contains a natural material palette of wide-plank oak and Carrara marble.

A pair of living spaces round out the expansive main level defined by a great room that basks in daylight. Brilliant pendant lights illuminate the space that offers a dramatic chef’s kitchen replete with modern cabinetry, stainless steel appliances and a central island with bar seating. Three separate sets of Fleetwood sliding glass doors divide the great room and courtyard.

Outside, the resort-caliber residence features a pool, a raised hot tub and a gas fire pit. Such design elements showcase the attention to detail Zak and Moore have invested in the home, said Ginger Martin of Sotheby’s International Realty, the Realtor listing the property.

The upstairs contains a pair of bedrooms, each hosting an en suite bathroom. There’s a common area, and all rooms on this level head out to an oversized deck overlooking the courtyard.

The exterior’s crisp, clean lines serve as a template that’s reinforced throughout the interior.

Rooms enjoy grand proportions and abundant builtins, as ceiling mounted speakers provide the soundtrack to everyday living.

West of Highway 128, the four-bedroom sits off the street toward the back of the lot and barely a few minutes from the center of town. Wooden slats directly above the windows lend visual distinction to the Wine Country contemporary.

“Zak and Moore’s collaboration produced a simply irresistible compound,” said Martin.
