Feature simulcast race: Grade 2, $1.25 million Charles Town Classic on Saturday

Update: Russell Baze, who retired in June as thoroughbred racing’s winningest jockey, is one of five inductees into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame who will be honored at a banquet Monday. Baze, who won 12,842 races, joins Bill Cartwright, Kerry Walsh Jennings, Carmen Policy and Matt Williams in the class of 2017. Previous horse racing inductees were jockeys Johnny Longden in 1985 and Bill Shoemaker in 2003. … Last week’s scheduled turf races were switched to the main track because of wet weather, so the first grass races since Jan. 1 should go as planned Friday. The fourth race is a $20,000 maiden-claimer going 11⁄16 miles, and the sixth is a $12,500 claimer going 1 mile. The latter features American Aristocrat, who has won three of his past four grass races and eight of 17 overall. … Bronze Star, who won the Oak Tree and Bull Dog handicaps on the summer fair circuit, drops in class to a $32,000 claimer in Friday’s seventh race. The 1-mile event also drew Eagle Screams, Solomon Bay and Pepper Crown — the 1-2-3 finishers from a $32,000 claimer March 25. … Nominations closed at midnight Thursday for the Grade 3, $100,000 San Francisco Mile on April 29. They close at midnight Friday for the $100,000 Campanile and Silky Sullivan stakes for Californiabred 3-year-olds April 30.

Elsewhere: Stanford is the 8-5 morning-line favorite for the Charles Town Classic, which he won in 2016, and Santa Anita invader Imperative is the 3-to-1 second choice as he runs in the West Virginia track’s premier race for the fourth straight year. Imperative won it in 2014 and finished second in 2015 and fourth in 2016. … My Kentucky Derby top 10: Irish War Cry, Girvin, Classic Empire, Always Dreaming, Gormley, Gunnevera, Thunder Snow, Irap, McCraken, Battle of Midway.
