Span frustrated by injury

The Giants had an optimistic plan for Denard Span. They hoped the center fielder could return to the lineup Thursday. Instead, he was on an MRI table, and extremely frustrated.

Span said that after an initial glance at the pictures, team doctors told him that “nothing was alarming.” The results will be sent to a radiologist for another opinion on what was diagnosed as a sprained sternoclavicular joint.

“It felt better today for sure,” said Span, who was miserable Wednesday. He was in pain and drowsy from muscle relaxants after a failed first attempt at an MRI exam in a closed machine. Span, who is claustrophobic, was tested Thursday in an open machine.

Span got hurt crashing into the center-field wall at Coors Field on Saturday after making a nice running catch on a Charlie Blackmon drive. He felt better Sunday but took a bad turn Tuesday, leading to his trip to the 10-day disabled list. He is eligible to return Wednesday, but the team cannot say whether he will.

Morse idle: As the Giants were being no-hit into the sixth inning Wednesday night, manager Bruce Bochy turned to

Michael Morse and joked, “Hey, good-luck charm. What’s going on?”

Two innings later, Morse said, “Here’s what’s going on” and hit his history-repeating game-tying homer off Pedro Baez.

“I’m hoping he just sits right here and watches a nice win,” Bochy said before Thursday’s game. “But he’s our secret weapon. He’ll be ready.”

Indeed, Morse had a bat in hand as the Giants tried to score the winning run in the ninth inning against Kenley

Jansen, but he did not get onto the field. After Christian Arroyo and Nick Hundley struck out, Kelby Tomlinson singled. Bochy stuck with Gorkys Hernandez, whose single started Wednesday’s winning rally. After Tomlinson stole second, Hernandez struck out. Briefly: Madison Bumgarner will start the rehab on his sprained pitching shoulder Friday, Bochy said. … Matt

Moore held the Dodgers to two hits in seven innings, but one was Corey Seager’s first-inning homer. Seager was celebrating his 23rd birthday. Moore gifted him an 0-2 fastball down the middle.
