Joyce, Rosales dinged up

HOUSTON — Two A’s players hit by pitches in the series opener against the Astros on Friday were out of the lineup Saturday.

Outfielder Matt Joyce, hit by a curveball from Charlie Morton in the first inning, had an X-ray on his left big toe. There is no fracture, but Joyce won’t play until Tuesday at Minnesota because of the bruised toe.

“I’m fine, it’s just a little swollen,” said Joyce, who remained in Friday’s game after being hit.

Shortstop Adam Rosales, hit on the left hand by Morton in the second inning Friday, remained in the game until the ninth inning, and while he was not in the starting lineup Saturday, he played the final three innings.

Joyce, a left-handed hitter, wouldn’t have been in the lineup Sunday against lefty Dallas Keuchel anyway, and a few days off might not be a bad thing for him: He’s hitting .161.

The A’s still haven’t decided on a course of action with lefthander Sean Manaea, who left his last start with shoulder tightness. Manaea played catch again and said, “It’s very encouraging. Two good days in a row.”

Manager Bob Melvin said there is an excellent chance that Manaea skips a start but he might avoid the disabled list

because the A’s have an off day on Monday, and with Sonny Gray returning Tuesday, there is leeway to push Manaea way back to Saturday.

If placed on the new 10-day DL, however, Manaea would be eligible to return next Sunday, and that would give banged-up Oakland an extra bench player, such as catcher Bruce Maxwell.

Briefly: Chris Bassitt (Tommy John surgery) worked three scoreless innings in a rehab start with Class A Stockton at San Jose. He threw 40 pitches, allowed one hit and one walk and struck out three . ... Center fielder Rajai Davis, out with a left hamstring strain, said he is close to 100 percent ready to return. “I’ve got that explosiveness back,” said Davis, who will come off the DL on Tuesday . ... Daniel Mengden (foot) threw a 30-pitch batting practice session, Melvin said, and Felix Doubront (Tommy John surgery) threw a two-inning simulated game at extended spring training in Arizona.
