MLB reviews security for players at all parks

-

Major League Baseball is reviewing its security protocols in all 30 stadiums after Baltimore outfielder Adam Jones said fans shouted racial slurs at him in Boston on Monday and other black players reacted by saying it’s a common reality when playing in several cities.

It’s not yet clear what changes might be made, but league officials are starting by figuring out how individual clubs handle fan issues and complaints.

“We have reached out to all 30 clubs to assess what their in-ballpark announcement practices are regarding fan behavior,” MLB spokesman Pat Courtney said. “We are also reviewing text-message and other fan-security notification policies that are operating in the event there is an incident.”

In Boston, Jones said Monday night that he heard a vile racial slur several times and that a fan threw peanuts toward him in the dugout. Boston Red Sox officials apologized. Boston police said the peanuts hit a police officer and Fenway security ejected the man who threw them before he could be identified.

On Wednesday, the Red Sox permanently banned a fan from Fenway Park who used a racial slur toward another fan Tuesday. Police are investigating after a woman attending a St. Louis Cardinals game at Busch Stadium was struck by a stray bullet.

Police say the 34-year-old victim was inside the ballpark Tuesday during the game against the Milwaukee Brewers when she felt pain in her arm. She went to a first-aid station for treatment. A bullet later was found near her seat.

Police believe the bullet came from outside the stadium.

The Cleveland Indians put right-hander Corey Kluber on the 10-day disabled list with a lower back strain.

The Miami Marlins put right-hander Edinson Volquez on the 10-day DL with a right thumb blister and recalled right-hander Nick Wittgren from Triple-A New Orleans.

The Texas Rangers say lefthander Cole Hamels is expected to miss eight weeks because of a strained right oblique.

The Colorado Rockies placed catcher Tony Wolters on the seven-day concussion DL. He was hurt in the seventh inning Tuesday night when he got hit in the helmet by the backswing of San Diego’s Hector Sanchez.

The Rockies also reinstated left-hander Mike Dunn from the 10-day disabled list, selected the contract of catcher Ryan Hanigan from Triple-A Albuquerque and optioned right-hander Carlos Estevez to Triple-A.
