Peter Nelson Ehrlich
January 26, 1948 - May 2, 2017
Peter passed away after a biking accident in Petaluma, CA on 5/2/17. Survived by his beloved daughter Lily, sisters Iris and Toni, ex wife Marlene, nieces and nephew and their children. Loved and appreciated by many friends and colleagues. Born in Bronx, NY, the son of Herman and Rachel. He attended Horace Mann High School and Hobart College. Graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.S. in forestry. Worked in Golden Gate Park in the reforestation program and created the reforestation program for the Presidio. Lover of birds and plants, which translated into making a big impact on tree protection in the Presidio and beyond. He had encyclopedic knowledge of various tree species and was keen on ensuring the right plant for the right place in the field. He grew plants for a hobby and never lost his curiosity for new finds. This fascination with plants brought him around the world in search of rare species. He thrived in nature, fueling this energy and love for the wild through countless projects, including helping Andy Goldsworthy with plant-based art installations in the Presidio. Peter was a compelling storyteller with a sharp-witted sense of humor. A strong-willed man who always voiced and stood up for what he believed in, Peter will always exist through the legacy of his passionate spirit, inspired by this world and all its living beings. Please send donations in his honor to the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum.
