8th left fielder gets tryout

CINCINNATI — The Giants called up another outfielder Saturday and put him in left field.

“I’m hoping somebody steps up here soon,” said manager Bruce Bochy, who will continue to hold tryouts until someone can win a job, or at least hold it for a week.

The latest candidate is Justin Ruggiano, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Sacramento. To create roster space, outfielder Drew Stubbs was designated for assignment. Stubbs was 2-for-22. “It’s all about making adjustments,” Bochy said. “You have injuries, you need production somewhere. We hope to have it figured out here soon.”

Ruggiano, 35, became the Giants’ eighth left fielder of the

season, seventh to start. The others: Jarrett Parker, Chris Marrero, Brandon Belt, Eduardo Nuñez, Gorkys Hernandez and Aaron Hill. Kelby Tomlinson hasn’t started in left but has played there in two games.

Ruggiano was hitting .259 at Triple-A Sacramento. He played nine games in the majors last season for the Rangers and Mets, going 8-for-24 with two homers. He has 51 career homers.

“I’m trying to come in here and be a piece of the puzzle,” Ruggiano said. “Contribute in

ways I can contribute and, if I’m not out there, be positive and have good energy.”

Mac Williamson, who was in the left-field mix before his quadriceps injury in spring training, is hitting .234 with 15 strikeouts in 47 at-bats in the minors.

“He’s not there quite yet with the timing,” Bochy said. “He’s still trying to find his swing.”

Lincecum anniversary: Tim Lincecum made his majorleague debut 10 years ago Saturday. After finishing last season in the Angels’ farm system, Lincecum hasn’t ruled out pitching again in pro ball.

“Timmy always has a place in all of our hearts,” Bochy said. “Not just the talent he was but the person he was. I still remember this 160-pounder going out there with that unbelievable stuff.

“He earned the nickname ‘The Freak.’ He was a freak of nature with the stuff he brought to the table with his size.”
