Syndergaard won’t return until after All-Star break

-

New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard will be sidelined through at least the All-Star break because of a torn muscle behind his right arm.

Syndergaard, the hardestthrowing starting pitcher in the major leagues with an average fastball velocity of 98.7 mph this year, partially tore his latissimus dorsi against Washington last Sunday. He has been told not to throw for six weeks and will need a long period to build up arm strength again, equivalent to a full spring training,

“It stings,” he said Saturday, two days after he was examined in Los Angeles by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

Syndergaard was scratched from an April 27 start against Atlanta with what the Mets said was biceps and shoulder discomfort. Syndergaard pitched April 30 at Washington and lasted just 11⁄3 innings. He went on the 10-day disabled list the following day.

Mets shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera injured his left thumb against the Miami Marlins on Saturday night and will have an MRI exam Sunday. Cabrera tried to make a diving, backhand stop of Marcell Ozuna’s grounder on the outfield grass,

but landed on his glove hand. He stayed down, rolling onto his back in pain. Price on track for May return: Boston ace David Price could return to the rotation by the end of May, provided he continues to feel good in his recovery from a strained left elbow. Price has been doing well throwing simulated games, and manager John Farrell said that his next simulated session — scheduled for Tuesday — would ideally be his last before beginning a rehab assignment. Briefly: Mike Trout was scratched from the Los Angeles Angels’ lineup and is day to day with tightness in his left hamstring . ... Orioles closer Zach Britton is back on the DL with a left forearm strain — the same injury that recently sidelined him for two weeks. Britton came off the 10-day DL on Tuesday and appeared in two games before feeling discomfort in his pitching arm . ... Cubs outfielder Matt Szczur was designated for assignment to make room for left-hander Rob Zastryzny . ... Pirates starter Jameson Taillon was placed on the 10-day DL with groin discomfort.
