Stanford baseball wins 10th in row
Colton Hock tied a Stanford record with his 13th save of the season, Matt Winaker hit a three-run home run and the Cardinal beat host Arizona State 7-5 for their 10th victory in a row, the longest active winning streak in college baseball.
Stanford (29-12, 12-7 Pac-12) has won 10 in a row for the first time since May 18-June 13, 2003.
Denis Karas’ grand slam helped Cal mount a comeback at No. 1 Oregon State, but the Beavers again pulled ahead to win 11-10. The Bears (21-23, 12-11 Pac-12) will look to avoid a sweep Sunday against the Beavers (37-4, 20-3) Motor sports: Ricky Stenhouse Jr., the last car to qualify, bumped Dale Earnhardt Jr. and won the pole for Sunday’s NASCAR Monster Energy race at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.
Earlier at Talladega, Aric Almirola earned his third career Xfinity Series victory by holding off a hard-charging pack in the closing laps. Hockey: A day after defeating the United States at the World Championships, co-host Germany came crashing back to earth by losing to Sweden 7-2, which moved to the top of Group A. Also, Slovakia got a goal with one minute left in regulation to tie it and defenseman Peter Ceresnak scored in overtime in a 3-2 win over Italy. Latvia beat Denmark 3-0.
In Group B, the Czech Republic rebounded from a loss to Canada by routing Belarus 6-1, and left wing Patrick Thoresen had two goals and an assist as Norway downed co-host France 3-2 in Paris. Switzerland blew a 4-0 lead before scraping past Slovenia 5-4 in a shootout. Volleyball: Nicolas Szerszen led Ohio State to its second straight NCAA volleyball championship, hitting .480 and finishing with 16 kills and eight digs in the top-ranked Buckeyes’ 25-19, 25-20, 25-22 victory over BYU in Columbus, Ohio. Ohio State (32-2) also beat BYU (26-5) in the title game last year.
