Fredrick John Smith Jr. passed away on his 90th birthday at home in Roseburg, OR, where he and his wife Alice have resided since 2006. Fred was born February 23, 1927, in NYC to Fred John Sr. and Isabel (Jones) Smith. As a WWII veteran he attended Russell Sage College in NY and was a well-travelled USN and merchant seaman of 10 years, and attended the Art Students League of NYC. He called Spain home for a decade, and San Francisco for 36 years, and remodeled his home at 2130 Folsom, a building which had survived the 1906 earthquake.

He was a general contractor, cabinet maker, actor, painter and sculptor, leaving behind wrought iron and hammered copper doors, stained glass and other unique works throughout S.F., the U.S., and Spain. He was active as an actor and playwright in the Bay Area and Oregon and in 2008 his play A Bowl of Rose Leaves was performed in SF. His paintings were shown in Europe in the 60’s, and he left a collection soon to be published as a book. His representational paintings are loved for their San Francisco street scenes.

Fred fought for civil rights in Chicago, lead a peace moratorium in Michigan in protest of the Vietnam war, and spoke out against injustice through his writings, paintings and influence.

He is survived by his wife Alice Smith, his daughters Malaga Smith and Serrana Pilar, 3 stepchildren, 5 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. We’ll miss his wit, influence, his strong love and belief in us. Contact
