Community events at Frank Bette Center for the Arts

Secret Art Sale: This January event is designed after the Mystery Art Sale in East Hampton, N.Y., where each 5-by-7 piece of art costs $20. The event features art from local schools, the center’s adult artists and community members. The secret is the art is only signed on the back so buyers don’t know if the art was created by a student or a professional artist or even a celebrity. This exhibit is held at South Shore Center. The money raised benefits local schools and the center.

Alameda on Camera: 48 photographers have 48 hours to photograph 48 different sections of Alameda one weekend in February. From there, they print their photos or create mixed media art. This isn’t strictly a photography exhibit but all art is photo-based. Alameda on Camera is currently on display at the center until June 4.

Plein Air Paintout: To be held July 31-Aug. 5, 40 artists are juried to paint in Alameda for five days. That is followed by the Alameda en Plein Air exhibit and sale of the paintings from Aug. 11 to Sept. 30 at the Frank Bette Center for the Arts. “This event is a wonderful visual celebration of Alameda’s historic homes, tree lined streets, and business districts; marinas; beach; naval air station and ships; views of San Francisco and the Port of Oakland,” spokesperson Kris Warrenburg said. “We have artists come from all over California and from as far away as Connecticut and Tennessee to participate.” There is also a Holiday Boutique, where local artisans create one-of-a-kind jewelry, fiber, ceramics, glass, wood, paper arts and mixed media arts just in time for the holidays.
