Stanford win streak ends
Stanford’s winning streak was the longest active streak in college baseball, but Arizona State beat the 13th-ranked Cardinal 9-6 in Phoenix to snap the run at 11 games.
Stanford (30-13, 13-8 Pac-12) spotted the Sun Devils (20-24, 7-14) a 5-1 lead, but came back to tie it at 5-5 in the second inning before ASU scored three runs in the third and held off the Cardinal from there.
The 11-game streak was Stanford’s longest since 1999, and it comes in the final season of head coach Mark Marquess’ 41-year tenure.
Cal (21-24, 12-12 Pac-12) was swept at No. 1 Oregon State (38-4, 21-3), losing the finale of the three-game series 10-2.
USF (24-25, 9-15 WCC) scored a season-high 18 runs on 24 hits in an 18-4 win against visiting Pepperdine (18-27, 7-14). Dominic Miroglio led the Dons with a home run and five RBIs.
Hockey: The United States bounced back from its surprise opening loss at the world championships with a 7-2 rout of Denmark in Cologne, Germany, thanks to a hat trick from the Arizona Coyotes’ Clayton Keller in the Group A game.
Earlier, defending champion Canada and Russia both continued their solid starts with resounding wins. Center Vladislav Namestnikov and left wing Artemi Panarin had two goals and two assists each in Russia’s 10-1 win over Italy.
In Paris, Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon had a hat trick and an assist as defending champion Canada routed Slovenia 7-2. France defeated Finland for the first time, winning 5-1 in a Group B match.
